Occupy Advent approached me to create posters and a logo for their movement in 2011 —right in the heat of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Their desire was to “reclaim” the advent season and its original intentions and draw it away from secularism and consumerism, bringing back the call to slow down in anticipation of Christmas.
I decided to approach the posters with a reclaiming of Christmas songs, taking secular Christmas song lyrics and connecting them to a passage in the Bible which correlated. For example, I took the lines “He sees you when you’re sleeping. He knows when you’re awake” and paired it with a Bible passage which reads “You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.” I hope to one day continue with this series, as I have recieved positive feedback and requests for the posters from around the country and even internationally.
